The Juniper Tree: Card of the Week, 25th August 2014

Card 8.25.2014

Back in the days before children’s fairy tales were inoffensive  Disney cartoons and plush toys, the brothers Grimm entertained kids with dark, spooky  yarns about  poisoned apples and hungry witches.  Folks  rejoiced when the evil meanie (usually) got their comeuppance.   One such tale is “The Juniper Tree”  —    In it, child brother and sister inherit an evil stepmother (natch!) who wants to do anything she can to make sure brother doesn’t grow up to get the family inheritance.  What’s an evil step-mom to do? Why, stick an apple in a chest and lop off the boy’s head with the heavy lid when he reaches in to get it, then bandage the head back on and get the innocent sister to accidentally wobble it off,  thus blaming herself for his demise.   Poor innocent sister — she buries his bones under the Juniper tree and a lively bird observes her purity and innocence and goes about town singing a beautiful song about it.  The miller gives the bird a millstone, a jeweler gives him a golden necklace and a cobbler gives him some red shoes in return for this lovely song.  The bird of apparent Karma returns to the home to give the sister the goodies and while he’s at it, he  drops the huge millstone on Evil Stepmom–squashing her flat.   When the dust clears, brother is back, smiling and OK  and everyone has a wonderful feast and lives happily ever after.

This week there might not be a magic bird with a millstone to fall on the evil step-mom in your world, but there is a message of protective powers guarding you from harm and helping you be victorious in your bravery.  Justice may  not always seem apparent or fair, but it’s in those times that your bravery and fortitude are required.  Life doesn’t always seem to shine out “Security” and safety. Sometimes we have to work for it and be brave in spite of the circumstances.   Juniper is here this week (or whenever you’re reading this)  to help us do just that.   This card says CHEER UP – the Universe, forces of justice, help, security and protection have our back.

Here’s the thing about security; we all want it and rank it as the chief need in our lives, but we often feel like we don’t have it.  The truth is we can’t always change things or alter reality to make us feel safer or more secure but we CAN look after ourselves and loved ones. This goes a far away towards making us feel more secure.   After all, worrying and freaking out about things that haven’t even happened certainly won’t help you feel the flow of security.

This week… take some steps to make yourself (and those you love) feel more secure.  Get a check-up on those systems that support you every day.  Taking this step can actually make you feel better about things knowing that someone (you!) is looking out for your well-being.   Plus, hearing that things are in working order and A-OK will bolster your feeling of security about those things you’ve already been taking care of.    Allow others to come in to help you – sometimes having an extra pair of hands or someone saying “hey, you’re OK!”  can make you feel a lot better.   If you allow people to rally around you, you won’t feel as if you’re taking on the weight of the world alone.   Cut your losses if you’re in way over your head and taking on too much. You’ll feel more secure and confident in your care-taking ability if you allow yourself to take those basic steps.   The more secure you feel, the mores secure others around you will likewise feel.

It’s up to you this week to choose to use the tools and circumstances around you as grist for the mill (speaking of millstones), to be brave and to be secure!
